Assemblies are of two types. Executable(EXE) and Non-Executable(DLL).
Again Non-Executable assemblies are of two types :- Private and Shared.
Private assmblies are accessible within the application and Shared assemblies can be accessible from multiple application.
Assembly contains :- Metadata, IL, Manifest, Resources.
Metadata :- combination of various tables such as parameter table, Method table etc. These tables contains information about types.
IL :- assembly instructions to be compiled to native language with the help of JIT compiler.
Manifest :- information about assembly such as version, name, culture etc. Source: CoolInterview.com
