    A photodiode is made to detect light quickly a solar cell is made to collect energy from light. They are both typically silicon diodes, but modified to meet their different requirements. A photodiode has to be fast, which means low capacitance, which means small area of silicon. Therefore, it is not very sensitive, and cannot generate much power from light. A solar cell has as large an area as you can afford to buy, getting watts per square inch. There are other differences in the way they are made, and how the PN junction is grown, but they all relate to this difference in purpose.

    Solar cells convert sunlight directly into electricity by generating electron?hole pairs in a solar cell via internal PV effect while photo detectors, detect photons or optical signals and convert them into electrical signals via internal photoelectric effects

    A photodiode is a type of photodetector capable of converting light into either current or voltage, depending upon the mode of operation.[1] The common, traditional solar cell used to generate electric solar power is a large area photodiode.
    Photodiodes are similar to regular semiconductor diodes except that they may be either exposed (to detect vacuum UV or X-rays) or packaged with a window or optical fiber connection to allow light to reach the sensitive part of the device. Many diodes designed for use specifically as a photodiode will also use a PIN junction rather than the typical PN junction.

    A solar cell (also called photovoltaic cell or photoelectric cell) is a solid state device that converts the energy of sunlight directly into electricity by the photovoltaic effect. Assemblies of cells are used to make solar modules, also known as solar panels. The energy generated from these solar modules, referred to as solar power, is an example of solar energy.

    A solar cell is a transducer which converts solar energy to electrical energy.When light is incident on the cell, it is absorbed in the semiconductor material and thus the recombination takes place.Lot of solar cells are made of photodiodes only.

    A photodiode is a diode which starts conducting in reverse direction as soon as light is incident on it.So basically there is a little difference except that photodiode should have fast response time and solar cells should produce more electricity so constructionwise only they differ with each other but the basic priniciple of operation is the same.
