Question: What is "Common Type System" (CTS)?

Answer: CTS defines all of the basic types that can be used in the .NET Framework and the operations performed on those type.
All this time we have been talking about language interoperability, and .NET Class Framework. None of this is possible without all the language sharing the same data types. What this means is that an int should mean the same in VB, VC++, C# and all other .NET compliant languages. This is achieved through introduction of Common Type System (CTS).

In order that two language communicate smoothly CLR has CTS (Common Type System).
For example in VB you have "Integer" and in C++ you have "long" these datatypes are not compatible so the interfacing between them is very complicated. In order to able that two different languages can communicate Microsoft introduced Common Type System. So "Integer" datatype in VB6 and
"int" datatype in C++ will convert it to System.int32 which is datatype of CTS. Source: CoolInterview.com

>Net treats all laguages are equal i.e a class written in C# should be same as in VB.NET. Languages must agree on the meaning of these concepts befor the can integrate with one another. In order to make language integration a reality,Microsoft has specified a COMMON TYPE SYSTEM to which every .NET language must abide. CLR supports two different types: Value types and reference types. Source: CoolInterview.com

CTS provides a type system that is common across all languages.CTS defines how data types are declared, used,&managed in the code during runtime. It also defines rules that ensures that the data types of object written in various languages are able to interact with each other. Common type system is the subset of the CLR. It enables the common database system to all the .net languages. It define conventions to convert objects from one language to another. It provides smooth communication between two languages.
Example:-VB.net has integer & C# has int, CTS change both into system.int32

The common type system defines how types are declared, used, and managed in the runtime, and is also an important part of the runtime's support for cross-language integration. The common type system performs the following functions:

Establishes a framework that helps enable cross-language integration, type safety, and high performance code execution.
Provides an object-oriented model that supports the complete implementation of many programming languages.
Defines rules that languages must follow, which helps ensure that objects written in different languages can interact with each other.

CTS defines all of the basic types that can be used in the .NET Framework and the operations performed on those type.
Web services (sometimes called application services) are services (usually including some combination of programming and data, but possibly including human resources as well) that are made available from a business's Web server for Web users or other Web-connected programs. Providers of Web services are generally known as application service providers. Web services range from such major services as storage management and customer relationship management (CRM) down to much more limited services such as the furnishing of a stock quote and the checking of bids for an auction item. The accelerating creation and availability of these services is a major Web trend.

Users can access some Web services through a peer-to-peer arrangement rather than by going to a central server. Some services can communicate with other services and this exchange of procedures and data is generally enabled by a class of software known as middleware. Services previously possible only with the older standardized service known as Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) increasingly are likely to become Web services. Besides the standardization and wide availability to users and businesses of the Internet itself, Web services are also increasingly enabled by the use of the Extensible Markup Language (XML) as a means of standardizing data formats and exchanging data. XML is the foundation for the Web Services Description Language (WSDL).

As Web services proliferate, concerns include the overall demands on network bandwidth and, for any particular service, the effect on performance as demands for that service rise. A number of new products have emerged that enable software developers to create or modify existing applications that can be "published" (made known and potentially accessible) as Web services.S).
