Datafiles and descriptor files are related to Datasets. Descriptors files generally contains the description of the data contained in the data files. In simple understanding descriptor file contains the pointer to the datafiles and these two together are called the datasets.

Descriptor file and Data File are the dataset files.
*Descriptor file will contain the schema details and address of the data
*Data File will contain the data in native format
(Eg: c:IBMInformationserverDatasetsFILENAME.ds)
Also there are two more files related to datasets
*Control and
*Header

data set will create 2 types of files
1.descriptor file
2.data file
1.descriptor file:

it will contain the address of data file
2.data file:
------------
data file will have the data

based on configuration data files will create but descriptor file will one only
