To improve the query performance,
1. Make sure that fields are fetched in the order in which they are defined in the database table.
2.In the where clause make sure, all the key fields of the table have been used if available.
3.After select/Read statement always check SY-SUBRC value, if it is eq 0 then only proceed further.
