Replace:-
The Replace function replaces a sequence of characters in a string with another set of characters (a number of times).
The syntax for the Replace function is:
SQL> select replace('satyam','am','kam') from dual;

REPLACE('
---------
Satykam

Syntax
The syntax for the Replace function is:
Replace ( string1, find, replacement )
string1 is the string to replace a sequence of characters with another set of characters.
find is the string that will be searched for in string1.
replacement will replace find in string1.
In Oracle/PLSQL, the translate function replaces a sequence of characters in a string with another set of characters. However, it replaces a single character at a time. For example, it will replace the 1st character in the string_to_replace with the 1st character in the replacement_string. Then it will replace the 2nd character in the string_to_replace with the 2nd character in the replacement_string, and so on.
The syntax for the translate function is:
translate( string1, string_to_replace, replacement_string )
string1 is the string to replace a sequence of characters with another set of characters.
string_to_replace is the string that will be searched for in string1.
replacement_string - All characters in the string_to_replace will be replaced with the corresponding character in the replacement_string.

Applies To:
? Oracle 8i, Oracle 9i, Oracle 10g, Oracle 11g

For example:
Translate('1tech23', '123', '456); would return '4tech56'
Translate('222tech, '2ec', '3it'); would return '333tith'
SQL> select translate('satyam','aya','ven') from dual;

replace function replaces a sequence of characters into another sequence of characters

where as translate function also replaces a sequence of characters to other sequence of character, the main difference is it replaces character by character. it replaces a single character at a time. Source: CoolInterview.com

i have a little confusion in the below query
For example:
Translate('1tech23', '123', '456); would return '4tech56'
Translate('222tech, '2ec', '3it'); would return '333tith'
SQL> select translate('satyam','aya','ven') from dual;
as u specified '222tech' string will be replaced with '333tith'.
and also u specified it will replace the 1st character in the string_to_replace with the 1st character in the replacement_string. Then it will replace the 2nd character in the string_to_replace with the 2nd character in the replacement_string, and so on.
-- when it comes to 'satyam'.. i expect the replacement happens for the strings 1 and 2 only.. as aya having 'a' character in repeat. so, third 'a' character will not be replaced with 'n'.

please revert on this. if my ques is not so clear. Source: CoolInterview.com
